Causes of Hair Loss in Women

Under the direction of hair restoration surgeon Dr. William Yates, the Yates Hair Science Group offers a range of surgical and nonsurgical options for the treatment of hair loss. In addition to treating men, Dr. Yates is committed to meeting the unique medical, emotional, and aesthetic needs of women who experience hair loss.

Although hereditary hair loss is more common and typically more pronounced among men, many women also face this genetic condition, known in the scientific community as androgenetic alopecia. Other causes of women’s hair loss are specific to the female gender. Telogen effluvium, for example, commonly occurs after pregnancy, causing women to shed significant amounts of hair on a daily basis. This condition also can occur after major surgery, extreme weight loss, and periods of intense stress.

Because they face higher risks from certain diseases, such as lupus and thyroid disease, women more frequently experience the hair loss that often accompanies these diseases. Hair loss also can occur as a result of common female health issues such as iron deficiency and polycystic ovarian syndrome.
