How Can Stem Cell Therapy Bring Back My Hair?

Hair loss is a problem for about 80 million people around the world. Men are more likely to experience hair loss than women (around 90% are afflicted with some type of hair loss by the time they are 50 years old), but women are by no means unaffected by the problem. There are several causes and factors that influence hair loss, ranging from heredity to environmental influence to autoimmune disorders.

Stem cell therapy is used to treat and prevent many different diseases and ailments. Stem cells are unspecialized cells which can be altered to become specific types of cells with directed functions. They can be harvested from many different types of tissue, but in adults they are found in the largest concentrations in the bone marrow and fat tissue (adipose). Fat tissue holds many more stem cells than bone marrow and harvesting from it involves the least risk of doing so with any type of stem cell.

In the past several years, researchers and physicians have developed incredible new methods of using stem cells to treat hair loss in their patients. During the process, an experienced hair loss physician like Dr. Yates harvests stem cells from the patient’s fat tissue and places them into a centrifuge system to concentrate and purify them. They then combine the cells with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and inject them directly into the patient’s scalp to stimulate hair growth and prevent further hair loss. This treatment provides even more benefits than PRP alone by replacing the lost layer of subcutaneous fat in the scalp where the hair follicle thrives.

Certain types of baldness will cause the scalp not to respond well to this type of therapy because follicle stem cells need a signal from the skin in order to grow hair, but an experienced hair loss physician like Dr. Yates will be able to determine what type of treatment is right for you.
