Prevent Hair Loss with These Essential Vitamins and Minerals

Your hair can be a great source of pride and an essential part of feeling self-confident about your appearance. Unfortunately, most men and women will suffer from some degree of hair loss at some point in their life, making them feel less confident. Those who are worried about the appearance of their hair may turn to certain shampoos or conditioners that boast added vitamins and minerals in order to give hair a healthy boost in growth.
However, the best way to make sure these products are effective, you should already have the appropriate levels of these vitamins and minerals in your body. The best way to do this is to have a healthy and well-balanced diet that contains a variety of vitamin and mineral-rich foods. If you find that there are certain vitamins or minerals that you are lacking in your diet, there are numerous multi-vitamin supplements on the market that you can take.

The following six vitamins and minerals have been shown to help keep your hair healthy and aid in the prevention of hair loss:

Biotin

Biotin has become increasingly recognized for supplementing hair growth and is infused into many different hair products. Biotin is a water-soluble B vitamin, which means your body cannot store it. This means you need to ingest it daily in order to reap its benefits. Many different foods contain biotin, including chicken, cheese, almonds, yogurt, liver, meat and oily fish such as salmon and tuna.

B Vitamins

B vitamins are water-soluble vitamins that can help to prevent hair loss. Like biotin, its water-solubility means you need to ingest it every day in order to reap its benefits. Foods rich in vitamin B include salmon, dark green leafy vegetables and seaweed.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C, also called ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble nutrient that is found in certain foods. It has a role in supplying our scalp with oxygen-infused blood that promotes hair growth and is also critical to iron absorption. It also boosts collagen, which is a protein that fights off the free radicals that have an adverse effect on the growth of hair as well as its thickness and texture.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D has many health benefits, including promoting healthy growth in hair follicles. Many people are able to get vitamin D from the sun, but there are also supplements you can take. Eating eggs, fortified cereal, and oily fish can also help.

Iron

Iron is a very important mineral for promoting hair growth. Foods rich in iron should be incorporated into your diet including red meat, pumpkin seeds, broccoli, dark chocolate, sun dried tomatoes and whole wheat pasta. Drinking a glass of orange juice with these foods will help to facilitate the absorption of the iron into your system.

Omega Oils

Omega oils help alleviate dry scalps, increase your hair’s elasticity, and promote hair growth. They are essential fatty acids, but our bodies do not naturally produce them so it is important to incorporate them into our diet by eating oily fish, whole grain cereals and fresh seeds.
