Skin Protection. Sunscreen types.

Summer is almost here! Better weather means you need great sun protection to prevent a number of unsightly skin conditions.

There are so many options on the market today, it can be a bit confusing. When it comes to taking preventative skin care measures into your own hands, sunscreen is up high on the list.

Here is a break down so you can choose what you feel is best for your skincare needs!

The main two types of sun protection are physical and chemical.

Chemical sunscreens are what you see most often on your shelves at your local stores, beaches and pool decks. They most often come in lotions or sprays. They are easily absorbed, hydrating to the skin and need about 20 minutes of curing time before sun exposure. These are designed to prevent sunburns but not to prevent tanning. They absorb the UV rays and then transform them into heat which is why it sill causes tanning, freckling, age spots and melasma.

Physical Sunscreen act differently creating a barrier on the skins surface that shields and reflects the UV rays. This type is best for problematic skin and works immediately when applied. The downside is it often leaves a white residue on the skins surface and is more easily rubbed off.

If your looking for the strongest preventative measure, in my opinion, physical sunscreen is the best option with proper usage in conjunction with internal and external antioxidants! We offer this powerful combination for you at Dr Yates Lifestyle Med Office for you to take home. Start your summer off with this new healthy habit!
